Introducing Factiverse Live Fact-Checking

Fact-checking has traditionally been a manual and time-consuming process. Traditionally, it involves meticulous noting of claims, sourcing evidence, and concluding. Despite its importance, this method has inherent drawbacks: it's slow, labour-intensive, and prone to human error.

The rise of social media and video sharing has allowed anyone with a device to publish misleading claims 24/7. Journalists are trying to combat these claims but it is increasingly becoming unattainable to manage in the age of AI. That’s if they rely on the traditional process.

In response to these challenges, Factiverse is proud to announce our latest innovation: Factiverse Live Fact-Checking. It is still in the alpha, an early version, however we have already received positive testimonials.

We are currently offering seamless video, audio, and live broadcast transcription. We can provide instant fact-checking of claims and search for citations in real time in multiple search engines.

We recently put this technology to the test during the EU Parliament debates with great success. Excited by our first pilot we set up live fact-checking of the first US presidential debate of the year. This time we encountered a few challenges - the number of claims that candidates said during the debate was so high, that our system got a bit of an overload. However, in the aftermath, we have run the debate through multiple rounds of AI analysis, extracted hundreds of claims, and detected controversial statements from both presidential candidates which we have published in a report.

The traditional process has multiple fact-checkers work in teams to gather claims and then another team to analyse those claims. Manually comparing and contrasting sources.

Gathering all the claims, proofreading all those claims, passing those claims to other team members, fact-checking those claims, and then delivering verdicts. It's an extremely time-consuming process.

This process, while thorough, is not always fast enough to keep up with the rapid dissemination of information, especially in fast-paced environments like political debates.

The information that these claims spread is just too fast for this process.

Fact-checkers work fast, and still however at times miss out on important key claims during their analysis. They also pressed on time to go in-depth and add more nuance to their research. Instead, they spend more time on tedious manual work that can be automated so that they can free up time for high-quality breaking news research.

If they do not put out a key fact-check on a claim and then that claim spreads, it has the potential to become a major source of misinformation.

They simply often need more time in their analysis process to debunk the sheer amount of claims that are propagating.

We ran multiple tests of this product with our users to see if this product would be useful in their workflows. Here is what one key user from the Danish Fact-Checking Organisation, Tjekdet, had to say;

This process has traditionally been a time-intensive and manual process but with Factiverse Live Fact-Checking it does not need to be. Factiverse aims to empower journalists, fact-checkers, and analysts to detect and fact-check claims with more efficiency and accuracy. All so that these workers can continue to make high-quality, groundbreaking discoveries, and analyses that they don't have time for today.

Live fact-checking is a new product from Factiverse, which also offers a Factiverse Chat GPT plugin, an AI editor web app, and an API. Factiverse's live fact-checking technology has been developing since 2016. The company was founded in 2020 and has been tested with promising results by fact-checking partner organizations in the Nordics. FactiverseThe company is the technology partner for the EU-funded project NORDIS for Nordic fact-checkers.

So how does Factiverse Live Fact-Checking work?

Factiverse Live Fact Checking streamlines the fact-checking process through advanced AI technology. Here’s how it works:

1. Attachment and Transcription

Users can attach a specific piece of audio or video (whether prerecorded or live) to the product. As speakers in the video begin talking, our tool initiates the transcription process.

2. Claim Detection

As the content is transcribed, Factiverse employs advanced AI to identify factual claims within the text, highlighting them for easy review.

3. Real-Time Verification

Each claim is cross-referenced by conducting searches across multiple search engines and databases, providing real-time verification.

4. Instant Results

The results are displayed instantly, with a supported rate and all the evidence used to reach the verdict. Users can navigate through the UI to find verified claims, review detailed source information, and make informed decisions based on accurate data.

5. Comprehensive Reporting

After the content has been analysed, we produce a detailed report containing the claims, verdicts, and supporting evidence for easy review.

Our Live Fact-Checking product was used on The US Presidential Debate

We used Factiverse Live Fact-Checking to showcase the power of Factiverse Live Fact-Checking during one of the most significant political events of the year: the US presidential debate.

Debates are notoriously challenging for fact-checkers due to their structure—claims are often met with counter-claims, creating a dense web of statements that require verification.

During the debate, our tool detected 757 claims made throughout the debate. From both the candidates and the moderators. Each claim was analysed and given a verdict based on relevant sources and databases.

This comprehensive analysis was completed in minutes, typically requiring a large team of fact-checkers working over several hours.

Here are some examples of the data our tool generated on the debate:
